Lynne Sorensen, Growing Through Grief Coordinator for Southern Hawkes Bay working alongside trained volunteers.

A loss and grief support programme for children
Growing Through Grief uses the widely recognized Seasons peer support programme to help children who are grieving. Seasons™ is a programme of peer support groups for children who are experiencing loss or grief, perhaps due to the death of someone close to them, the separation or divorce of their parents, or other major family change.
Seasons groups are available for children aged between 5 and 12. The groups are small, usually just three or four children close in age, with one or two trained adult Companions. Being part of a Seasons group means coming to a one-hour group session, once a week for the length of a term.
The aim is to provide those in the group with a safe time and place of their own, in which they can explore their issues and feelings about loss and change. The approaches used may include music, stories, artwork, games and other activities suited to a particular child, group or age. Topics introduced include feelings, telling our stories, memories, changes, our strengths, and looking ahead. Each programme ends with a Celebration.
Most importantly, Seasons is about peer support - often the greatest benefit is in being with others who are experiencing similar things.
Asked what they would tell other children about Seasons …..
“It’s a lot of fun” – 6 year old girl
“Come it is a good place if you have lost someone and want some help and it is not boring at all! You will absolutely love it! It is very fun” – 9 year old girl
“To come here to learn heaps of things and it will help you” – 12 year old boy
Seasons groups begin early each term, and are held in Dannevirke, Woodville and Weber.
There is a suggested donation of $20 to attend the programme. If this is not affordable, please speak with the co-ordinator.
